Acne, Rosacea, Eczema, Wrinkles, Age Spots… should I keep going? I’ll stop since so many of my beauties have one or more of these issues, especially as we age. You’d be surprised the complaints I hear about skin that are all too common. The good news, there are products and regimens out there that cater to your skin type. But, let’s hold on product recommendations, and get to the core of why skin care is so necessary.
The Five Golden Rules of Skincare… Made Easy!
Okay, let’s get into the down and dirty. Serums, toners, anti-again, oh my! Everyone’s trying to sell something, but what does it all mean and what is actually important? Here’s the skinny on a solid regiment:
- Cleanse (AM/PM)
- Eye Cream (AM/PM) (Amazing for bags and keeping lines away especially post Tox)
- Treatment Product (Traditionally there is one for AM/PM but this can vary depending on the skin type. Hyperpigmentation, sensitive skin, rosacea, etc… might need more than one product daily if addressing multiple issues)
- Moisturizer (AM/PM –some have anti-aging in it is a bonus)
- Sunscreen (AM everyday… no joke.. do it daily.. it’s a must if using a retinol)
Two things to remember:
- New product changes can break out your skin – even if you don’t traditionally breakout – this is normal.
- Don’t give up so quick, sis. Give the product time to work.
Five Steps Using the Right Products Is All I Need?
Yes, babe. Five steps above mean you’re on a skin care journey sure to produce results and protection from the daily elements. Keep in mind, the general misconception is that the more you put on the skin, the better it is… No the more your pores get clogged. Bottom line, if you put too much or too little of the wrong product that is the issue. The perfect amount of the *right* products you put on your skin, the more likely the success of a daily regimen.
For me at beBold Aesthetics, we focus on SkinMedica and IS Clinical, both clinically proven to give the results you’d want. No, not just because I use them and think they’re amazing. Key words: clinically proven. I could bore you with what is in each product, but let’s just save that for a skin consult. These products used are multifaceted. Real quick though – can I just tell you the that IS Clincals cleaner features both a toner and make up remove. I absolutely love it. Not to mention both lines are packed with anti-aging ingredients – something we can all benefit from.
First Step: Consult. Second Step: Treatment
What’s the diff? Easy breezy. The consults where we discuss and address your skin care regimen and top concerns. Treatment is the step where we create the exact pairing of product and procedure to produce the best possible results. It’s a lot to digest, I know. But that’s what you have me for. Acne to hyperpigmentation to age spots – I got you, boo!
As a rule of thumb:
- In the morning, the product you want for your “treatment” step has to include an anti-oxidant; What is anti-oxidant you might ask? The nerd in me will break it down. This is a substance that protects the skin from free radicles (things in the environment) that can negatively affect the skin by harming healthy cells. Scary? Not so much. The amazing thing is that ant-oxidants can help prevent and it also have anti-aging effects.
- At night we need a Vitamin A… retinol is a derivative from vitamin A which is needed for cell production, healing, preventing breakouts… WAIT! Does this mean I should use a retinol even if I don’t have acne? YES, sis, yes… Vitamin A stimulates fibroblast in the dermis (nerd me is here again, sorry). What this means? Collagen production which equals thicker, tighter, and less wrinkly skin. Ready to come see me yet?
Cliff Notes!
- Stop buying all the skin care products that sound (and smell) amazing. Focus on what is “clinically proven” to produce the results you want for YOUR skin type.
- More is not better with skin care. Annoying, right?
- Skin care is investment. Invest in the right products and be patient as you begin to use them. Don’t be discouraged if you break out.
- Don’t follow google reviews or amazon ads. Take the time to get a consult and a plan in place that addresses your specific needs.
Okie, dokie! That’s all I have for you today. Off to start prepping for National Botox Day which is tomorrow, Nov. 18!
