What is the “Lip Flip” with Botox?
Ok so let’s break this down.
First there is Filler such as Juvéderm and Restylane products which add volume, projection and countering to the lips, so how does Botox (Neuromodulators) come in to play? Botox goes into the Orbicularis Oris muscle of the upper lip causing the top lip to relax and flip up. This is used for people who are not ready/don’t need lip filler but want their top lip to pop up just a bit giving a fuller appearance.
How long until I see results?
Just like Botox anywhere else in the face, it can take up to 14 days for the full results and last about 3 months.
Does it hurt?
Don’t worry I got you covered with the best numbing cream and it will feel like a pinch and a burn. Breathe, we got this.
How does it feel?
Okay, so I tell all my patients at about day 3 post lip flip your top lip will feel funny. This lasts for about 10 days and then goes away. It can be hard to drink form a straw, rub your lips together to put on lipstick, make a kissy face.
Why do the Botox lip flip over filler?
Sometimes we do both…. Sometimes we need to relax the muscle of the top lip to get more surface area to put the filler into. If the top lip is turned up, then we have more room to add volume.
If someone has a gummy smile a secret is to also treat the upper lip (along with the LLSAN- the muscle that elevates the upper lip that really causes a gummy smile), however treating the upper lip will help elevate the gummy smile as well.
Sometimes we just do the lip flip for raising/ to turn the top lip up. Sometimes filler is not needed, or we are not ready for filler. Either way this is a great alternative to enhancing the top lip.
